Mental Weight Loss (Shedding)

The human body sheds 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells every minute. Within a year, the average human body will shed close to 9 pounds of skin.

Our body is designed to release old skin, because otherwise the microscopic bacteria, viruses and parasites that we encounter daily would eventually burrow deep enough into the epidermis to cause disease.

By shedding skin, we are able to continually regenerate a healthy outer layer of skin that protects us from infection and disease. In addition to keeping us healthy, shedding skin also allows us to grow.

The human body is wonderfully designed, and with proper care and maintenance, it will self heal and work properly.

But, what about the human mind?

It seems to me that the care given the mind must be much more deliberate.

We shed skin with out even thinking, but it takes a great deal of thought and development to shed old ways of thinking.

Could it be that if we don’t take the time to purposely generate fresh thoughts and ideas that the mind could get stagnant and sick?

Could it be that if we don’t properly reflect and learn how to rid ourselves of mental wounds and superannuated ways of thinking that the mind could get infected?

Could it be that if we don’t attain knowledge to exercise the muscles of our minds, that the mind could become weak and decrepit?

If we must shed skin to remain healthy and grow, what must we do with our minds to achieve the same goals?

Snake SheddingIn nature, even grasshoppers, spiders and snakes must shed their skin to continue to thrive.

Why would it be any different for the human mind?

I believe that the mind contains the hidden secret to true happiness and a fulfilled life, for each of us. However, this secret is only revealed when we are willing to take on the work of shedding old ways of thinking. Work and care must be taken to shed old labels, bad names and false myths we’ve attached to our thinking about ourselves.

Many of these old labels, bad names and false myths were attached at a young age. They were attached by an angry parent, an immature sibling or a mean classmate.

Those awful labels often stick and follow many of us through life. These labels have infected our minds and depleted our self-esteem, thus changing how we socialize and act.

These labels have diseased some of our minds so deeply, that it has completely changed us from the type of people we truly want to BE.

This week, my questions for reflection are:

  • What old ways of thinking and being do you need to shed from your mind?
  • What do you need to do, to ensure your mind is healthy and shedding off antiquated thinking properly?

“The world we have created is a product of our thinking; it cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” ~ Albert Einstein

Over the last 4 to 5 minutes, while you read this post, your skin shed another 150,000 to 200,000, dead skin cells.

What does your mind need to shed today, this week and later this month, to ensure you’re keeping your most prize possession (your mind) healthy?

Be sure to take the time to invest a few moments into challenging your own thinking. I’m confident it will pay good interest.

Keep shedding skin, shedding thoughts and staying inspired…it’s a lifestyle choice!
